Amongst the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), neurological disorders have been recognized to lead to significant mortality, morbidity, disability and socioeconomic loss. Central nervous system (CNS) disorders comprise a wide span of conditions, ranging from migraines to neuromuscular and musculoskeletal incapacity, and pain. They include Epilepsy, cerebrovascular disorders, migraine, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, motor neuron disorder, traumatic injuries, brain damage due to birth trauma, neuromuscular disorders, demyelinating disorders and neurological disorders consequent to nutritional deficiency.

India, with a population of more than 1.35 billion, is facing new challenges in the health sector due to a paradigm shift in disease burden. As a case in point, the contribution of non-communicable neurological disorders to total DALYs in India doubled from 4·0% in 1990 to 8·2% in 2019. In 2019, the largest contributors to the total neurological disorder DALYs in India were stroke (37·9%), headache disorders (17·5%), epilepsy (11·3%), cerebral palsy (5·7%).
